In its Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 PC blog post, for instance, Sony highlights, “new raytracing options with individual quality settings to finetune performance and fidelity across a broad range of hardware configurations”. There’s also talk of settings for raytraced interiors, shadows, and ambient occlusion – adding what Sony calls “an additional layer of believability with realistic shadows and increased depth to the game”. Gameplay-wise, Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 is very similar to the series’ previous installments. The fundamental difference is that this time both Peter Parker and Miles Morales are playable. The playable character changes during certain plot points, for example, if one of them isn’t able to arrive somewhere in time or when they need to split up.

Every fragment pieces Marko’s humanity back together, with sound clips illustrating the pain he’s endured over the years. Spider-Man 2’s main story can be completed in around 12 to 15 hours, while getting 100% completion will take somewhere within 25 to 30 hours for most players. Some of the side content is underwhelming, but there is a lot of great stuff to check out as well. Instead of arriving on Earth via a meteorite, as it did in the video game, the Venom symbiote came to Earth already bonded to Spider-Man, fixing itself to him while he participated in the cosmic showdown SECRET WARS (1984).

Since the game lets you play as both Peter Parker and Miles Morales, this motif of them coming together to overcome their villains. While the first Spider-Man title launched on PS4 and was then remastered for the PS5, Spider-Man Miles Morales was released across both simultaneously. Moving forward, it’s evident Insomniac is ready to shift into a new gear focusing solely on Sony’s latest hardware.

They both have near-similar gameplay elements while also setting themselves apart, thanks to new changes to the old recipe. Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 stars Peter Parker and Miles Morales, facing off against three iconic Spider-Man villains. The first is Kraven the Hunter (Sergey Kravenoff), who arrives to New York alongside his gang to hunt who he perceives to be a worthy opponent. Said prey is the Lizard (Dr. Curt Connors), the second villain of the game, who Peter and Miles have to save from Kraven’s hunters. The pair does not work together as well as they used to, as Miles notices his older colleague gradually change. Previously compassionate, kind and fair Peter Parker has become aggressive, ruthless, even bloodthirsty.

There are 14 unique districts, each with its own set of objectives to complete before you can unlock fast travel to that part of the map. Gliding is especially great for crossing long distances thanks to the numerous wind tunnels that carve their way through New York’s seemingly endless grid of streets flanked by art deco architecture and modern mirror-like skyscrapers. The main story took me around 18 hours to complete before I hit 100%, and the subsequent platinum trophy popped up to congratulate my efforts after 27 in total. Despite whatever loftier ambitions the story may have, this is still unapologetically an old-school approach to open-world game design, and nowhere is this displayed more clearly than in its optional quests. Spider-Man 2, and to an extent all great Spider-Man stories, tackle themes of adolescence and puberty – a time of uncertainty for even the most normal of teenagers trying to control bodily fluids.

The initial trailer gave us a look at Peter Parker and Miles Morales in action together, with Venom joining the fight at the very end. During PlayStation’s September 2023 State of Play, Insomniac showcased a closer look at Marvel’s New York. Senior Creative Director Bryan Intihar noted that this version of New York is nearly twice the size of the original game, thanks to the addition of the Queens and Brooklyn boroughs. The release date for Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 was announced at Summer Game Fest 2023 by Insomniac Games.

First hypnotised by the light of the monitor as he muddled through Simon the Sorcerer on his uncle’s machine, he’s been a devotee ever since, devouring any RPG or strategy game to stumble into his path. Though hotfixes are flying thick and fast as I finish out this review, for me the patches have so far failed to tackle frequent crashes to desktop. I find it difficult to diagnose my experience—while others have seen wide-ranging performance issues, for me the game runs smoothly, until it suddenly doesn’t. Without warning, in seemingly undemanding scenes and without any preceding slowdown, the game simply gives up, citing only nonsensical display driver issues.
