To their credit, the way you can highlight side objectives by pressing the right stick is a welcome upgrade over mere icons on a map. This isn’t a world that beckons exploration or discovery, necessarily, but it is a step in the right direction toward creating greater immersion and mercifully less time spent looking at the map screen. Where the first game starred Peter Parker, and its spin-off starred Miles, this one has both.

Tasked with finding a missing grandfather, players must track the man across Brooklyn at the behest of his granddaughter and caretaker. It culminates not in an action set piece, but a quiet moment where Miles sits with an elder battling dementia, ruminating in Prospect Park at the place he proposed to his late wife. Reflecting on how these memories will soon be lost to him, it’s a stark reminder to Miles (and the player) that this world is populated by real people and their experiences, and that is worth fighting for. You swing freely around New York, taking on whatever missions and activities you choose. Swing, jump, and utilize the new Web Wings to travel across the city, switching between Peter Parker and Miles Morales in open world exploration to experience different stories and epic new powers. But you can play as both Peter Parker and Miles Morales, switching between the heroic Spider-Men on your crime-fighting adventures to experience their individual gameplay abilities and story elements. Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 features a total of 32 main story missions that has you play as both Miles and Peter as they protect New York from various threats old and new, including the ferocious symbiote, Venom.

Despite being awash with paramilitary criminal organisations, New York has never felt more toothless and dull. My hope for this sequel was that with the core action already perfected, there would be the space to improve on the wider formula, creating a more interesting New York playground. Instead, Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 simply has more stuff—a bigger story, more pointless collectibles, sprawling skill trees, and double the Spider-Men. Despite its imperfections and overall lack of side content as well as a rushed third act the gameplay is near perfect in every way possible. The first game will always be better but this one is still a great game that’s definitely worth playing.
