Four BMW 535is and five Peugeot 406s were used during shooting, and one of each was actually cut in half and filmauto mieten towed at high speeds to create various scenes. It’s a car that guarantees immunity from death – you just have to be in the driver’s seat. In Quentin Tarantino’s Death Proof, which makes up one half of the Grindhouse double bill (with Robert Rodriguez’s Planet Terror), Kurt Russell plays a Hollywood stuntman and serial killer who targets beautiful women in his customized 1970 Chevrolet Nova SS (for “Super Sport”). With a memorable matte black paint job and a white skull painted on the hood, the “Death Proof” is like a pirate flag on rubber wheels, with a threatening vibe that feels like an extension of its sinister owner.
While the movie is really pretty bad, Viva Las Vegas is notable for two things, one, it was a hit, mostly because it starred Elvis Presley, and two, it’s responsible for the theme song that you are current humming to yourself right now. Rudolf Caracciola was one of the early heroes of F1 and The Racers is a movie loosely based on his life and career. His career spanned decades and was not without controversy, but it makes for a great movie, with Kirk Douglas playing the fictionalized version of Caracciola, called Gino Borgesa. The track on which the opening race (Motor Speedway of the South) takes place is actually based on and an enlarged version of the real life Bristol Motor Speedway. The venue for the Piston Cup tiebreaker race (the Los Angeles International Speedway) is a conglomeration of the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum, the Arroyo Seco in Pasadena where the Rose Bowl is located, as well as the California Speedway.
