They’re just as enjoyable, as it feels like the suit is trying to burst out of the rumbling DualSense controller in my hands. This aggressive style of play is rewarded, as the only way to heal is by building up your focus bar – filled by landing hits and timing perfect dodges – and is another way to make sure that exciting rhythm of combat is never lost. It’s enough of a roller coaster to hold your interest, and the way the city physically changes and evolves to fit the ongoing narrative is impressive (from ‘post-Sandman attack’ to ‘overrun with big game hunters’ and beyond). But from a project this obviously big and expensive, it all feels disappointingly undercooked. With thrilling action gameplay and a deep story, Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 capitalizes on the heights of its predecessors and somehow makes New York big enough for the two web-slingers who inhabit it. What’s more, it transforms villains from dated tropes to complex characters, and humanizes the people we save, and the ones who save us, in unforgettable ways.
You can play as Peter and replay as Miles, each time enjoying a unique experience. For those with a hazy memory, there is a brief recap of both Peter and Miles’ stories so far available, which is handy, as this is very much a sequel that weaves in both plotlines and characters from the previous games and accompanying DLC. You won’t want to jump in for the first time here since Spider-Man 2 builds on the first two games both in its mechanics and its story – but of course, there’s little reason not to, since those games are also excellent. Avoiding spoilers, the basic premise revolves around Kraven the Hunter, who is, well, craving a hunt. For those uninitiated in the character, he’s essentially The Predator, an Apex hunter blessed with super strength who has chosen New York as his next hunting ground. It’s a great starting point that sends the city’s hero and villain dynamic into flux as he sets his sights on the biggest prey possible.

The rhythm of precision dodges, the new perfect parries (so you’re not only swerving and striking now), and acrobatic finishers are hugely satisfying, as is chasing high-hit combos to keep the fight as stylish as possible. The movement is smooth and the hits are crunching, like some sort of peanut butter hybrid that every one of your foes is allergic to. Every bone in their body may be broken and every organ punctured, but of course, they’ll somehow live to commit crimes again.
However, these moments in the game are excellent for character building and help build on the amazing character development shown throughout the game. Following these brief moments of downtime, Black Cat gives Peter and Harry a lead to a nearby Hunter base and the two of them go to take them down. The next few missions of the game are quite uneventful from a larger standpoint, as Peter Parker loses his professor job and returns to photography. These segments show off basic game mechanics like gadgets and suit customization, as the story takes a break before the excitement picks up later in the first act. Marvel’s Spider-Man 2’s seems to retain most of the gameplay it had from the previous games based on the gameplay footage that they revealed.
Spider-Man 2 on PC has already received updates meant to address some of its more serious technical problems, but I am still experiencing crashes. All kinds of PC gamers with all kinds of rigs have reported crashing issues with Marvel’s Spider-Man 2, so it’s clear that more work needs to be done to make the game more stable. Once those updates come through, Spider-Man 2 should be an excellent new addition to Sony’s lineup of PC games, as the core experience is still a ton of fun when it works. Granted, they’re only rated for 30fps at a lowly 720p, and you’ll still need to find a honking 140GB of SSD space, but the basic GPU and CPU requirements aren’t too lofty at all.

Peter opens the garage door to reveal a rudimentary EMF set-up, continuing his and Harry’s good intentions. As Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 begins to wrap up after a climactic fight against Venom in Together, plot threads are tied up, whilst others are newly established, hinting at possible things to come in the inevitable future of the series. While Downtown Brooklyn is actually much larger in real New York City, you can still check some known places like Coney Island and and the iconic Brooklyn Bridge. Harry reunited with Peter and Mary Jane early in Marvel’s Spider-Man 2, apparently cured of his terminal condition and ready to use his family’s resources to change the world. In reality, Harry had secretly bonded with the Venom symbiote, which hid within Harry’s body, with its origin revealed to be from a meteorite recovered by Oscorp years prior. After learning Peter is Spider-Man, Harry uses the symbiote to help his best friend fight crime and help people around New York.
Story missions choose for you, but often swap seamlessly between them as the action demands. Out in the open world, you’re free to change at will, with only a handful of activities requiring one or the other. PC Gamer’s got your back
With users able to pre-download the digital game prior to its release, they will be able to play the game as soon as it’s available for play in the PlayStation store. For fans of the first game, or Spider-Man, or action games in general, Spider-Man 2 is an easy recommendation. There are about five dozen teasers and easter eggs by the end so I’m sure we’re in for more, whether that’s another Miles-sized game or another sequel down the road. But for now, yes, this is all the Spider-action you need for a good long while.
